Make a Homemade Informal Vest Out of a Sweatshirt

Sweatshirts are made two ways. The more common type of sweatshirt has a seam at the shoulder, the same way a t-shirt does. The other type has the seam run diagonally from the neck to the armpit. To be clear, I will call the latter a sweatshirt with diagonal seams and if I don't specify what type of seam the sweatshirt has, assume it is the former.
The first type of vest is real easy to make. Simply cut the sleeves off of the sweatshirt outside the seam leaving about an eighth of an inch of the sleeve on the shirt. Or you can leave a half an inch of sleeve on the sweatshirt, which can then be folded over at the seam and hemmed. Now you have an informal vest for the backyard and the outdoors.
In the second step, we eliminate the way that the shoulders go out too far like a potato sack. Visualize how a vest, sleeveless shirt, or sleeveless coat would look on you. In front of the mirror, mark with a piece of chalk where you are to cut the sweatshirt. It helps if at this stage the sleeves are already cut at the seam. You can save them for future crafts. If it is a diagonal seamed sweatshirt, don't bother cutting the sleeves first, for there is too much margin for error.
Remove the sweatshirt and compare the lines. The best way is to fold the shirt in half from the middle, lining up the neck ribbing, the sides, everything. Then compare the chalk lines and cut along the outermost line, through all four layers of cloth. Put on the vest again and see if any further alterations need to be made. Remember, if you are hemming the cut edges, leave a little extra for that. You now have a sweatshirt vest that looks better than a potato sack.
The next step involves eliminating the bagginess of the sweatshirt. To do this will involve taking a tuck in both sides of the vest. Here you will estimate how much cloth will have to be tucked. The ribbing on the bottom of the sweatshirt tends to be tighter than the rest of the sweatshirt and so it will need less of a tuck. Using pins, preferably safety pins, make the tuck, then try on the vest and adjust as necessary until you have the right fit. Make sure each side is even. Turn the vest inside out and cut the tucked part about a third of an inch after where the pins are. Then sew along the pins. The armholes will look like a v-neck; do a little alteration on them to overcome that. Hem all the cut edges if desired. One last step is to cut a V into the front of the neck at the center and hem over the edges for the vest look. You now have an informal vest. Or you can also use the vest as an undershirt as sweatshirt cloth doesn't soak with sweat like a cotton t-shirt does.
