Stinky Feet: "Not Your Stepping Stone"
Causes and Cures For Stinky Feet
In life, there are many "stepping stones" one must take toward a successful future; however, stinky feet would not be a chosen path. Consequently, many people suffer from unending foot odor, despite their best hygiene efforts. Nothing could be more embarrassing than having to take off one's shoes, only to have others think to themselves, "Where's the gas mask?" Surely, this is not the desired "sweat for equity" off one's back, since foot odors almost seem impossible to control or eliminate altogether. If left untreated, overactive foot sweating becomes an excellent breeding ground for both bacteria and Athlete's Foot (tinea pedis) fungi, as itchy rashes become part of the foul-odored fiasco. Fortunately, there is hope for stinky foot sufferers, since the first thing is to understand what causes excessive foot sweating and how to control it.
Human feet have over 250,000 sweat glands, so it is little wonder why offensive body odors have plagued humankind since the dawn of time. As an essential bodily function, sweating maintains a healthy temperature, while aiding in removing waste products. The amount of perspiration differs for each person, as above normal amounts of sweating is known as "hyperhidrois." Despite uncomfortable feelings that excessive perspiration can bring, the body would perish without sweating. Also called "sudoriferous glands," sweat glands seem more of a hindrance than a help. While sweaty palms make one wish he/she could avoid shaking hands, at least they do not secrete near the repulsive odor of moist feet. If choking stench and unpleasant feeling of sweat were not enough from the feet, one can thank the emergence of aprocrine glands making their grand debut during puberty.
Aprocrine glands are also dubbed "stink glands," as they radiate from armpits, ear canals, eyelids, breasts, nostrils, perianal, and perineal regions. In contrast, the rest of the body features sweat arising from the eccrine glands, which produce a clear, salt-watered fluid. In contrast to eccrine glands, the aprocrine glands secrete a thicker, milkier substance, which is a prime output for dining bacteria to enjoy, as evidenced by intolerable body odor. The putrid scents arise when bacteria, and even fungi, become right at home with the damp, humid climate of progressive sweating. Add lack of oxygen to the mix, and the recipe for disaster entails rampantly growing bacteria and fungi creating repulsive body odors and other havoc.
Like other sudoriferous areas of the body, there are several causes of smelly feet, which can be attributed to excessive sweating and shoe leather. Unfortunately, wearing shoes does not enable feet to properly venilate; therefore, constant sweating begins a flourishing garden of bacteria and fungi. Over time, bacteria secrete an unpleasant odor, since the feet spend hours being unwashed and perspiring inside the enclosures of shoes. As a result, foot fungus also emits unpleasant odors of its own, as constant itching and scratching give way to infection. Sure enough, with increasing perspiration comes the feasting of bacteria and fungi, as they excrete their waste products and produce foul odors.
Of course, not all fragrances come in the same bottle, so to speak, since everyone emits varying degrees of putrid foot odors. Different strokes for different folks, when it comes to the invasion of bacteria and fungi causing one person's feet to profoundly smell like stale limburger cheese, while others may end up smelling like decaying garbage, and so forth. Regardless of which type of foot odors is lavished upon an individual, you can be well assured that it has no appealing aromas like flowers or perfume, which is why one needs to take essential steps in curving such foul emissions.
Washing your feet every day is a crucial start, as this can be done with warm, soapy water. As learned in biology classes, soap aids in killing bacteria and leaves feet feeling fresh. In addition, there are anti-fungal soaps to successfully tackle fungus, such as Athlete's foot right in its tracks. If you have hyperhidrosis, it is even more important to bathe and wash your feet at least two or three times daily. Besides discouraging bacterial growths, keeping drenching sweat at bay also prevents fungi from taking stranglehold on the feet as well. Killing the bacteria and fungi are the keys to foot and other bodily odor control, which is why anti-bacterial and anti-fungal soaps, such as Dettol and Fungicure do the trick.
Herbal remedies, such as tea tree and thyme oils, work wonders in curing the discomfort of bacterial and fungal infections on overly saturated feet. Furthermore, changing your socks daily is also required in warding off malodorous foot conditions. The best sweat absorbing socks are cotton, or ones made with natural fibre materials, as opposed to nylon, which makes the feet perspire even more. Whenever possible, a change of shoes is recommended, as this gives time for previously worn shoes to air and dry out.
Odor Eaters are shoe insoles that can work wonders in mopping up sweat and odors from the feet. Placing Odor Eaters inside shoes helps alleviate sudoriferous conditions, while spraying deodorant, anti-perspirants, or perfume onto dirty, unwashed feet defeats the purpose. Soaking smelly feet in strong black tea ½ hour for at least seven days, or mixing two tablespoons of Epsom salts in two quarts of warm water cleans, dries, and freshens up feet. Not only does oatmeal help exfoliate skin, but it can also fight foot bacteria when added to a bowl of warm water and squeezed until the water appears milky. Feet should remain bathed in oatmeal solution for at least 10 minutes, then carefully patted dry. Rubbing alcohol or isopropyl onto feet, as you bathe/shower is another remedy, since excessively sweating feet can be reduced by wearing a pair of absorbant socks and changing them every 4 to 6 hours. For an alternate measure, feet can be soaked in 1 part vinegar and 2 parts water.
When not immerged in a liquid solution, sprinkling talcum powder all over the feet, or dusting with baking soda inside the shoes helps reduce heavy sweating. Plastic shoes do not fare well in halting increased sweating; therefore, it is best not to wear them. If the funky stench becomes a losing battle, then such shoes stubbornly emitting foul foot odors need to be disposed of. Since the same bacteria contributing to acne can also be the culprit for smelly feet, using 10% benzoyl peroxide may be in order. Although dryer sheets can temporarily mask putrid foot odors, it is not a permanent solution. A more enterprising solution is to use a roll-on anti-perspiration deodorant, such as one prescribed by a doctor, or over-the-counter Certain Dri.
In extreme cases, foot odor from primary or secondary hyperhidrosis can only be eliminated through medical intervention. There are several causes of hyperhidrosis, including thyroid or pituitary disorders, diabetes mellitus, tumors, gout, menopause, or specific medications. Moreover, doctors have also tried permanently annihilating heavy sweating with oral tablets, creams, lotions, deodorants, electrical gadgets, and acupuncture; yet, to no avail. Despite surgical methods performed in last 50 or 60 years, the battle of sweat-eating bacteria continues thriving to many individuals' dismay. With improved medical technology, optical surgical equipment has been beneficial for endoscopic surgeries to tackle the root causes of pooey aprocrine gland overflows.
Depending upon which bodily area has an overabundance of sweating, a doctor can warrant endoscopic thoradic sympathectomy (ETS) for overactive hand sweating, while axillary suction curettage is performed to control massive armpit perspiration. When it comes to never-ending foot sweating, lumbar sympathectomy is a surgical remedy. Only a doctor can successfully determine which surgical method is best for each type of hyperhidrosis dilemma.
Amazingly, our ancestors brought humankind into this world, despite the repelling body odors that were not conveniently subdued through bathing, or not-yet-invented hygiene products. One can only imagine having to hold his/her nose when traveling for days on the pioneer trails, or even settling down in their own homes, since hygiene products were virtually non-existent, nor were baths/showers readily available. Obviously, the ranks of body odor were somehow ignored, because no one in the human race would be here today, otherwise.
Maybe one day, medical science will finally conquer hyperhidrosis and the impeccable shame it inflicts upon its victims. Until a permanent cure arrives, body odor sufferers can only hope for a more permanent solution. For now, surgical and preventive measures are the only answers for never-ending sweating and undesirable body stench. Luckily, some dreams never come true, as in my past high school friend, Marie's dream about The Monkees singing, "I'm Not Your Stepping Stone. Sure enough, The Monkees literally "brought down the house" during their performance, after having incorrigible foot odors problems. Hopefully, you will never follow in The Monkees' stinky footsteps, since this is a "stepping stone" that warrants improved hygiene and possible surgery.
People Pass Out At Monkees Concert: Stinky Feet To Blame
If I owned a "time machine," I would gladly travel back to the 1960's and 1970's, since life was much cooler, yet more down-to-earth. The middle-class also thrived during the 1960's and 1970's, as mothers stayed home and raised their children, while fathers earned decent wages to support an entire family. Unless one worked in a high clearance U.S. Government or similar job, computers were almost unheard of as personal possessions. Cell phones were virtually non-existent, as only the original Star Trek TV series (1966 - 1969) crew seemed permitted to own such high technology communications. What's more is the music scene was much better during the 1960's than the drab tunes of the current 21st Century, because musicians were actually required to have real talent. Not surprisingly, The Monkees band still remained popular in the mid- to late-1970's, after their debut in The Monkees TV Series (1966 - 1968).
During the late-1970's, my then high school friend, Marie was an avid fan of both The Monkees and The Beatles, as The Monkees were very similar to The Beatles in many ways. Moreover, while The Beatles was comprised of Ringo Starr, George Harrison, John Lennon, and Paul McCartney, The Monkees featured Davy Jones, Micky Dolenz, Mike Nesmith, and Peter Tork. Amidst the Farrah Fawcett hairdos, teenage girls idolized The Monkees, The Beatles, Kiss, Rolling Stones, and many other popular bands of their era. Not surprisingly, Marie had a wild dream about The Monkees, which would rival any advertisement for foot odor control products.
IN MARIE'S DREAM . . . It was the late-1960's and The Monkees decided to visit our city's Coliseum
to perform a large concert. The hippie movement was still going strong, while the Vietnam War waged on, and psychedelic clothing, jewelry, along with complementary accessories, became true fashion statements. My sister, Sandy and I attended The Monkees concert with Marie, as we wore mini-skirts and go-go boots, while our hair was long and adorned with bandanas. Large earrings complimented our wardrobes as well, and they swayed to the music, while The Monkees played their songs. All in all, everyone seemed to enjoy the band, as evidenced by loud screams and encores.
The Monkees' music loudly echoed throughout the Coliseum, as everyone cheerfully clapped, waved their hands in the air, and danced to the tunes. Everyone seemed to be enjoying the concert, but little did they realize that The Monkees had not washed their feet, nor changed their socks for over two months! The Monkees began playing and singing, I'm Not Your Stepping Stone , as they removed their shoes, sat on the edge of the stage, and waved their malodorous feet in jubilee. Oddly enough, The Monkees continued singing, "When I first met you, girl, you didn't have no shoes…" and then proceeded toward a very uncanny performance. The diabolical stench of sweaty foot odors escalated inside the Coliseum, as The Monkees continued singing, I'm Not Your Stepping Stone. One by one, people began gagging and passing out, since by this point in time, even Odor Eaters insoles could not have redeemed them from such a rancid fate. The Monkees showed no mercy, as they continued singing and waving their pooey feet in fury, while more people fainted like prisoners inside a World War II Nazi Germany's gas chamber.
On went the music, as The Monkees continued waving their smelly feet toward their audience, as they sang, "Not your stepping stone---I, I, I, I …" Sure enough, it did not take long for the paramedics to quickly arrive with gas masks on their faces, as they expeditiously carried out a huge crowd of gasping and unconscious fans on stretchers. While everyone choked their way into unconsciousness, The Monkees continued singing, "Not your stepping stone. Not your stepping stone. Not your stepping
stone …" Meanwhile, paramedics medically treated and began evaculating ill fans from the Coliseum.
Once the crowd was rescued by paramedics, they would never forget that horrid day for as long as they lived. A person could never imagine feet smelling so badly, even to the point of "knocking the socks off " toward unconsciousness, once he/she fainted to The Monkees' putrid foot odors. Indeed, The Monkees will surely go down in history as having the most malodorous feet of all time. If one did not know better, he/she would swear they were traveling past a foul-smelling chemical factory, where the most obnoxious fumes continuously bellowed out of smoking tall stacks. As you most likely guessed, the very next day, the national and international news headlines read, "People Pass Out At Monkees Concert: Stinky Feet To Blame."
MEANWHILE . . . without Epsom salts, Marie finally woke up from her dream. If this event had truly occurred, it would rival The Who's tragic 1979 concert that also transpired inside Cincinnati, OH's Coliseum. Nevertheless, the moral of this story is to always remember practicing excellent hygiene, in order to prevent stinky feet from becoming an embarrassing "stepping stone."
