CicLAvia is Coming to Los Angeles
If you will be in Los Angeles on Sunday April 10th, over seven miles of streets will be closed to traffic and open to walkers, joggers, bikers, skaters and any other non-motorized vehicles for the CicLAvia event.
This is the second CicLAvia, after the inaugural event on 10/10/2020 and organizers plan to do four of these events per year with more planned for 7/10/11 and 10/9/11. CicLAvia is the Los Angeles version of a community event that started 30 years ago on the traffic and pollution filled streets of Bogota Columbia as something called a "Ciclovía". Streets were closed to cars and people were encouraged to come out and connect with each other and their neighborhood. This isn't a street festival and there aren't vendors and things like that, it's just about opening the streets to the community and encouraging them to come out and enjoy them as a giant park.
I went the event last year in my downtown neighborhood and it was fun and kind of weird to walk on the vacant streets . There were many people out just enjoying the experience. Although the event is promoted for walking and strolling, I saw a lot of people riding bikes very fast, annoyed at people just walking and strolling.
There were assorted sidewalk vendors selling things, and the occasional food truck as well, but the streets were not filled with vendors as during a street festival or block party. It's not a race, so there is no start or finish. The event has a bit of a hippie feel, so expect all kinds of unique performers and people, also protesters and people with political agendas. No tables may be set up, but the official website encourages participants to be creative to get around any restrictions.
The event is sponsored by a range of business and organizations and I assume the funds go to the costs of policing, cleaning and traffic control, which must be incredible for an event of this size. The event has a website, ciclavia.org with more helpful information including maps of the street closings.
The event starts (or ends) at a rest stop created at Melrose and Vermont and snakes through the city over about 7.5 miles of streets, ending (or starting) at Hollenbeck Park, near 4th and Soto in East LA. There is an official rest stop in MacArthur Park at Wilshire and Alvarado and on the South Lawn of City Hall in downtown Los Angeles. The rest stops will feature bathrooms, water stations and medics.
