Gift Card Doesn’t Work? Here’s What to Do (and Not Do)
The steps to take when an activated gift card won't work when online shopping
In 12 years of buying (and receiving!) gift cards, I've never had a spot of trouble until last week. I had received a handful of Macy cards for my birthday for purchasing some Fiestaware online. The ordering part when fine -- where I ran into trouble was at the checkout. Every time I tried to punch in the numbers and the security code, a red message would pop up that read "invalid." It took about two hours and four different phone calls to straighten up the mess. Had I known then what I know now, I could have had the whole thing cleared up in a couple of minutes.
If you've just received a gift card for your birthday and it isn't working, here's what to do.
Track down the activation receipt first. The activation receipt is your proof that the card is "live." It also contains a very important number that you'll need. Before you do anything, find that receipt because without it you are pretty much out of luck.
Do NOT return to the issuing store. My first instinct was to return to the store where the gift card had been purchased in hopes that it could be exchanged for a working one. What a waste of time! What I learned was that once a gift card has been activated, the store is discharged of any responsibility. They won't let you trade your non-working card for a new one, even if you have the sales receipts, activation slip, and proper identification.
Call the number on the activation slip. What the store will tell you to do instead is to call the 1-800 number printed on the bottom of your activation slip. It's here where you can verify if your card is indeed active and what's left on the balance. You can even replace a lost card using this number.
Call the number on your gift card. Once you've established that the card is active, it's time to call the customer service number on the back of the gift card. Since I was in the middle of an online transaction, the customer service rep at Macy's simply asked for both my card number and shopping basket number, then completed the order for me.
So there it is: If your gift card doesn't work and you know it's active, the thing to do is simply call the merchant telephone number on the back of the card. A card that might not work on an online order will work for the customer service rep who'll be happy to finish the checkout process for you.
