Timeless Halloween Costumes Using Sweatsuits
Sweatsuits work as a base for many costumes, allowing for warmth when trick or treating and can easily be repurposed as pajamas after Halloween.
Witches, pumpkins, bats, fairies, butterflies, devils, clowns, draculas and scarecrows have seemed to hold steady in popularity. The simplicity of making these costumes could spark imagination to spin off others using the same techniques. Sweatsuits work as a base for many costumes, allowing for warmth when trick or treating and can easily be repurposed as pajamas after Halloween.
The devil, dracula, clown, bat, cat, and pumpkin can all start with a sweatsuit.
Devil-Purchase a red sweatsuit, fashion a cape from red felt and use a hair band to attach horns cut from scraps of the red felt. Paint a dowel black and cut pitch fork tines from black posterboard. Tape the tines to end of the dowel.
Dracula-For Dracula, use a black sweatsuit and a cape made from black felt. Raid your jewelry box for a large medallion necklace and purchase a set of plastic teeth.
Bat-Again use a black sweatsuit. Purchase black tulle (this is the netting used for bridal veils and is inexpensive coming in a variety of colors). Cut large wings shaped like 2 "w's" that span from one wrist to the other. Pin or sew at the neck or wrists.
Cat-Use a black sweatsuit with a hairband. Attach ears cut from black felt, cut and sew a long tube from the black felt, stuff and attach to waistband with a safety pin for a tail.

Pumpkin-You'll need an orange sweatsuit for this costume and fusible web ironed to the back of black fabric. Trace and cut out a jack-o-lantern face and iron to the shirt front. Add a green or brown stocking cap for a stem.

Start with a purchased leotard with matching tights in your little girls favorite color. Using the same technique as for the bat wings, purchase the color of your choice of tulle for the wings of your fairy or butterfly.
Scarecrow-Have fun sprucing down a pair of overalls with numerous patches. If you stitch them on by hand they are easily removed after the holiday. Add a flannel shirt and straw hat. Push raffia into the neck and wrists of the shirt and the waist of the overalls.
Of course, all of these costumes could and should be embellished further with buttons, sequins, ribbons, and any other craft room find, adding your own special brand of imagination. Finish with make-up or a mask.
