Panic Attacks - One Woman's Story
That pounding heart, sweaty palms and racing thoughts - they could be signs of a panic attack.
After all this, I did feel silly when I went home and felt fine. But as a precaution I made an appointment with my physician for a check up. After running a battery of blood tests and finding out all was normal, I was left perplexed. Just thinking about it made me worry more and I tried taking an antidepressant hoping it would stop the occasional episode.
But because it wasn't a daily occurrence, I didn't think it was necessary to take medicine which could have harmful effects on my liver and kidneys. I wasn't depressed and just needed to handle stress better, that is what I told myself.
Several years passed before I even had another panic attack. I was a single mother now, and just paying the bills was sometimes more than I could handle on a day to day basis. This time the panic attacks came back fiercer than ever. Never before had I awoken in the middle of the night, heart beating and breath shaky. This was a new demon I had to face, the one who strikes when you are unable to fight.
I was left on the couch, huddled under a pile of blankets trying to get warm again. After the blood rushing through your body at lightening speed, you are left quivering with cold and fear wondering what the hell is wrong with you. That is what it feels like - an out of body experience. Anyone who has had one knows what I am talking about.
Again the doctor prescribed antidepressants and I felt like a zombie. This was not the answer for me and not my diagnosis. So I began my quest to find my own answers.
I knew that I would, could get through my panic attacks. And a bright spot is my heart is functioning fine - if it can withstand a panic attack it is very strong indeed!
I knew that if I was anywhere and started to feel like I was going to have one, I needed to get moving. Just getting up and distracting myself with something else helped. That is the most important piece of advice I can give to anyone in my situation. If you feel like you are going to have a panic attack, talk to someone. Get your mind off what you are thinking about and distract yourself.
I believe that this has helped me tremendously, just reading and researching. I still need some help when going to the dentist, doctor or optometrist. I am working on that also, and my hope is that I will make continued progress as I get older and more confident in my battle against my panic attacks.
