How to Apply Mineral Powder Foundation

Tips and tricks to help you apply your mineral powder foundation.

Mineral makeup has moved beyond the status of 'latest trend' to becoming a permanent fixture in many of our makeup bags. And rightly so - its benefits include healthier skin, a more even skin tone, natural sun protection, and many natural ingredients. It once came only as loose powder foundation. Now, you can find mineral products in all forms of foundation, such as cream, liquid, and powder, as well as lipsticks, lip glosses, blush, bronzer, and even eye shadows, too. Loose powder still seems to be the product of choice for mineral powder foundation. Here are a few tips and tricks for getting the most out of yours.

Apply with a kabuki brush or other large, soft brush. Most loose mineral powder foundations come with a built-in sifter that will only allow a small portion of product to be dispensed at a time. Then, you can gently swirl your brush in the product and gently tap the handle of the brush to shake off any excess.

Apply in a well-ventilated area. Make sure you are applying this product in a well-ventilated area. Loose powder, especially brands containing talc, can be irritating to the lungs (for the same reasons that talcum powder is no longer recommended for use on babies.) Try not to shake too much product into the air, and keep in mind that it may fall onto your clothes or nearby counters or sinks.

Apply with a light hand. The old adage, "less is more" is certainly applicable to mineral powder foundation. Always start with less than you think you will need, and add more in layers until you achieve the look and coverage that you want.

Use over a mineral foundation primer. Foundation primer will help minimize the look of pores, even out your skin texture, and help your makeup stay on longer. This is typically in the form of a liquid; allow it to dry before applying your powder.

Use under a foundation spray. Many mineral powders come with an optional spray to set your foundation. This is a great way to keep your foundation looking natural and lasting well all day. Do not spray too closely to your face or you may cause the makeup to run.

Don't apply too frequently. One of the biggest mistakes women make with mineral powder is applying to many times during the day. While it naturally helps control shine, some women still find they get shiny in the afternoon. Use cotton blotting papers before applying more mineral foundation. Otherwise, you may end up with a messy, muddy cake of makeup sticking to your face.

For the best results, follow the manufacturer's directions. Don't be afraid to test out different colors and brands of mineral foundation until you find the one that you love best.
