Interview: Susan Seidelman Talks the Hot Flashes
Director-producer Susan Seidelman discusses shooting the female-driven independent comedy The Hot Flashes, including how it chronicles the struggles of middle-aged women and breast cancer survivors, and working with the cast, including Brooke Shields.
All women are faced with the inevitable stereotypes that plague the process of reaching middle age, and even top Hollywood actresses are eventually forced to contend with the loss of innovative work to women half their age. Not only do women have to struggle with the reality of losing potential work, due to the natural process of aging, but also must face the truth that the public can also judge them when they're faced with the life-altering actualities of illness.
Director Susan Seidelman, who has made a name for herself in the filmmaking community since the 1980s with such female-driven movies as 'Suddenly Seeking Susan' and 'She-Devil,' once again tackles women issues in her new comedy, 'The Hot Flashes.' The helmer explores the inspiration of older women who are determined to prove not only their own value in their community, but also the importance of supporting cancer awareness, in the independent film, which opens in select theaters on July 12..
'The Hot Flashes' follows middle-aged mother and wife, Beth Humphrey (Brooke Shields), as she learns that a beloved local breast-cancer clinic has lost its major funder and is in danger of closing. In an effort to keep the clinic open, she rallies a group of her friends and former high school basketball teammates to the rescue. Together with Ginger Peabody (Daryl Hannah), Florine Clarkston (Wanda Sykes), Clementine Winks (Virginia Madsen) and Roxie Rosales (Camryn Manheim), Beth forms a basketball team and challenges the current Texas State High School Girls Champions to a series of games that will raise money to save the breast-cancer clinic. The middle-age women end up becoming national media sensations, and make a true difference to middle-aged women and cancer survivors across the country.
Seidelman generously took the time recently to talk about filming 'The Hot Flashes' over the phone. Among other things, the director-producer discussed how she was attracted to screenwriter Brad Hennig's script, in part because the story offers meaningful messages about the struggles of middle-aged women and the plight of breast cancer survivors; how the versatile cast of the well-known leading actresses all bonded on the set, which helped to create a genuine between them in the film; and how making the drama on an independent budget offered her the opportunity to creatively build the messages of the story through a female director's point-of-view.
