Four Tips for Runners to Prevent Shin Splints

Shin splints are a common and painful problem for joggers, but there are many ways to avoid them. Learn about four helpful methods to stop shin splints in this guide.
Also published on:

Anyone who has spent a significant amount of time running has probably had to deal with shin splints at some point. This condition--known medically as medial tibial stress syndrome--occurs when too much force is applied to the shin and the neighboring tissue. In addition to being painful, shin splints can take a long time to heal, and will take even the most dedicated runners out of commission.

For ages, I used to get shin splints frequently, and figured they were an inevitable side effect of running. But, eventually, I got smart, and found some great tips for preventing them, and I've now been free of them for over two years.

While there is no method that will eliminate 100 percent of shin splint cases, following these four tips should go a long ways in keeping you pain free:

Avoid Concrete

Many people run exclusively on concrete or other hard surfaces. After all, roads and trails made of concrete are plentiful, and they usually provide good traction.

However, running on hard surfaces is a medically proven cause of shin splints, so try to find a grassy area or other soft surface. I've been successful in finding park trails made of concrete that have a lane of grass on both sides, which are popular with many runners.

Try Going Barefoot

A growing trend among runners is to not use any shoes. While this tip certainly isn't for everyone, barefoot-converts swear it is a more natural and safer way of running. Indeed, there have even been studies that back up these claims.

My only advice for those who want to try going barefoot is to start slow, and give your feet time to build up protective calluses.

Try Minimalist Shoes

If barefoot running sound too extreme, but you wouldn't mind ditching those old-fashioned running shoes, there is a popular middle ground called minimalist shoes. These types of shoes are designed to mimic the mechanics of barefoot running, yet still provide a small amount of padding.

One of the most popular brands of minimalist shoes is Vibram FiveFingers. I recently bought my second pair, and can attest that they are quite comfortable.

Take Days off

I share the obsessive mindset of many runners who hate to take even a single day off. But resting, especially if you're starting to feel sore, is sometimes the smartest thing to do.

However, that doesn't mean you have to ditch a daily cardio routine. Biking and swimming are great low-impact alternative activities to try, and they can be a good change of pace.
