How to Make a Sweatshirt Shrug
Make a comfy shrug from an old sweatshirt!
You can make a sweater-type shirt that looks nothing like a sweatshirt by first cutting off the waistband and neck band from the shirt. Fold the front in half and cut the shirt along the fold, from the neck to the waist. Now decide how you want the finished shrug to look.
You can cut the waistline of the sweatshirt to be fairly short or a little longer. Along the front slit, you can leave the cut as-is, or do something a little different. From the center of one side of the slit, cut at an angle up to the neckline. From the center point again, cut down to the waist, at an angle. Do this to the opposite side as well. This will make a shrug that forms a deep v-neck shirt which has an upside-down "v" shape from the center, down.
If you cut the center slit, then leave it as it is, you can either hem it, sew ribbon onto each side of the slit, or even attach lace with fabric glue or needle and thread. If you cut the slits to come to a point at the center, attach a ribbon or braided yarn piece so you can tie the shrug shut.
You have options for how you want the sleeves to look, too. Cut and hem the sleeves to make them ¾ length or barely cut the cuffs off and hem them to make a long-sleeve shrug. For the bottom hem, neckline, center slit, and sleeves, you can hem them or you can sew or glue on lace, rickrack, ribbon or other trim.
Fabric paints offer another option for embellishing the sweatshirt shrug. It's easy to dispense them from their tubes and they're not expensive. You don't have to be really artistic to make designs on the shrug; make simple dots, short lines, squiggle marks, zigzag and similar shapes to create designs around the cut areas of the shrug.
Revamping an old sweatshirt into a new garment isn't hard to do and the shrugs are simply adorable. Wear them as you would a sweater, over a blouse or shirt, and wear them with jeans or skirts. They're warm and comfy and look fabulous!
