Is it Safe to Exercise in Inclement Weather?
Several times in recent days I have seen joggers outside in heavy snowfall. Is it safe to exercise outdoors in inclement weather?
Do the joggers just get caught out on the very long boardwalk after the snow starts or do they start their job after the weather becomes inclement? Some people exercise a certain amount of times a week no matter what the weather is like. Is this admirable or foolish? I guess that is a matter of opinion.
I love to go walking on the boardwalk but I don't go out in inclement weather. I even avoid being outside exercising if storm clouds are brewing. I have been caught a few times on the boardwalk when unexpected torrential rain and thunder and lightening starts and it can be quite frightening.
So are the joggers in the snow keeping their heart healthy or are they endangering their lives? I wonder how their doctors would answer that question?
As the New Year starts many of us are resolving to exercise more regularly. Also, with the stressful conditions for many now, exercise is the best way to handle all of the anxiety. It helps calm one down, especially if the exercise is down outside in a bucolic setting. Exercise is also good to help lessen depression.
Doctors advise that patients try to exercise for at least 30 minutes three times a week. Have you done that recently? If we all answer this question honestly the answer may too frequently be "no." I am trying to walk more now.
I do admire those with the fortitude to exercise no matter what the weather. However, I will keep my walks to those days when the sun is shining or at least the weather is not inclement.
It actually worries me to see the joggers outside getting drenched by the snow. I always think they are going to get very sick. Who knows, maybe they just arrive home with rosy cheeks ready to hang out by the cozy fire in the fireplace.
Is it safe to exercise in inclement weather? This is a good question to ask one's doctor.
