Summer Down Under - Turn Your Winter Gloom into Summer Bloom

While most of the world is enjoying the warm summer sunshine in the sunny months from June to September. The southern half of the planet is probably bundled in their hoodies, and or beanies, and anything else they can muster up to just try to stay warm.

Turn your wintertime misery into summertime bliss. In Perth summer starts in the beginning of December and ends in March. This is because its located in the Southern Hemisphere where the seasons are opposite of that to the Northern Hemisphere. If being out in the blazing, red hot sun, and scorching heat looking Santa Claus and Reindeer decorations downtown doesn't confuse you, and throw off your bodies biological clock, then nothing will!

A typical Perth summer consists of beaches, barbecues, and beer, and plenty of it. Trust me, when I say beer, I do mean plenty of beer. The Aussies (pronounced Ozzie's) love to drink. So if you are an alcoholic (or aspiring to be one) come on down, you'll fit right in. The only thing that would set you apart is you wouldn't have that annoying, twangy accent. Thank God for that.

A few of the popular beers in Perth are Crown Lager (Crownies), Little Creatures Pale Ale, and if you are on a budget, VB (Victoria Bitter). All which can be bought at your local pub, or bottle shop. I have to say that my personal favorite is Little Creatures Pale Ale, and coming in a close second is Crown Lager. If you have never tried any of them before, they are all worth giving a shot. If you are coming from The States, which you most likely are, I'm sure that you will find it taking a little getting used to the taste of the Aussie beer. Not to worry, you'll get used to it!

Kitesurfing, or in some parts of the world Kiteboarding is extremely popular in the summer months of Perth. With near perfect winds, and the Fremantle Doctor knocking at the doorstep you can rest assured that these guys will have some wind to play in. You can see the Perth coastline just littered with these kites, splashing their enormous kites across the deep blue sky. Its a kitesurfers paradise.

This is thanks to 'The Fremantle Doctor' (what the locals call the summer sea breeze) blows a steady 15-20 knot wind from the southwest regularly during summer months, making it the ideal for kitesurfers, and windsurfers alike. While you will see a lot of kitesurfing taking place in the pristine Indian Ocean, you will also see a lot of Kitesurfing on the mighty Swan River as well. Both spots are very popular with the enthusiasts.

Cottesloe beach is an iconic beach of Australia, and Perth's premiere flagship beach. Perfect for the family, kids, young adults, older adults, and older folks to suit. The main strip has plenty of places to eat, and drink from. Ranging from fish amp; chips to ice cream to meat pies. The water here is perfect for the younger ones as it is very calm and flat during the summer months. There is also a wonderful Indian restaurant overlooking the beach to dine if you so choose. Cottesloe beach is close to the city, and easily accessible by car, and both bus, and train.

Scarborough beach is another popular beach in Perth, and even more so during the summertime. At 'Scabs' as some of the locals would say you will find lots to do. Everything from Surfing, Kitesurfing, Volleyball, more Sunbathing, and of course even more food, barbecues. Did I mention beer? The surf is a bit stronger at Scarborough so be sure you swim in between the flags as recommended by the lifesavers (lifeguards). Scarborough beach is a very popular beach with the older teens, and young adults (if you can call them that). Expect a loose party like atmosphere at Scabs as opposed to the teenage/family crowd that you will find at Cottesloe beach.

Another very popular spot around Perth during the Summertime is Fremantle, or Freo as the local Aussies would say. It is about a half hours drive south from downtown Perth. If you have ever been to Santa Cruz, California expect a similar vibe. Fremantle has a very natural, almost hippie type of vibe to it.

Fremantle has a plethora of wonderful restaurants to choose from. Anything from succulent Italian to spicy Mexican. Above all though, I would recommend the basic Fish amp; Chips from Joes Fish Shack. It is just too good to pass up. Joes offers both dining in, and dining out. The dine in experience is nice, and the service is great, but I prefer to dine out during the hotter summer months. There is just something nice about sitting in the open, salty air next to the harbor in the warm sun while having a beer, or two and thoroughly enjoying a the hot, greasy, guilty delight.

Summertime days in Perth are always hot, sunny and beautiful with warm clear nights. If you are looking for something different like Christmas in Summertime follow the seasons and check out what Perth has to offer.
