Single Dad Stories: Raising the Bike Seat

The annual parenting ritual of raising a child's bike seat is a progressive rite of passage to adulthood. This annual ritual records milestones in the lives of our children.

The patches of blue sky offered the prospect of a spring day, free from rain. The sunshine added an air of excitement to our first father-daughter bike outing of the season. This was to be a daily adventure traversing a few miles of trails within the ancient forests of the endowment lands on our way to the University of British Columbia campus. I had taken my daughter out of school for a week to accompany me. Together we would ride our bikes to the university where I was attending a week-long course. While I attended my class, she would do her pre-assigned homework in the library and we would ride back to the rented apartment afterward.

I pulled Rachel's bicycle from the rack and rolled it into her waiting arms. She jumped on and sped off while I turned to get my bike. It was entertaining to watch Rachel's energetic peddling ahead of me. Her legs raced as she pumped her bike up the small hill in front of us. Her backpack slumped from her slight shoulders-burdened with homework. It was then that I noticed the problem. Rachel's knees rose well above her bike seat with each rotation of the pedals.

Annual Parenting Rituals
I sped up and quickly closed the gap between us. "Rachel," I cried, "Pull over. I need to adjust your bike seat." A strange melancholic feeling swept over me as we pulled to the curb and entered into the annual spring ritual-adjusting the bike seat. "A year gone already," I wistfully reflected. From the look of her legs we would need at least two more inches, I thought, as I pulled the stem upward. "Try this, Rachel," I offered. Incredibly it was still too low. My little 10-year-old girl was growing up far too fast. Two more upward adjustments and I tightened the bike seat, four inches higher.

Growing Up
Rachel surveyed her bike with uncertainty. "Dad," she objected, "my feet can't reach the ground! The seat is too high." "Rachel," I coached, "this will increase your endurance and take full advantage of the length of your legs. Just try it." I stood back and surveyed my daughter with misty eyes. Her long legs had transformed her from childhood to adolescence within the span of a few moments on the side of a quiet Canadian trail. We climbed on our bikes and resumed our timeless journey-father and daughter peddling together in the cycle of life.

Life Lessons
Raising the bike seat has a lot to do with the process of personal growth. One discovers the ability to take things in stride, later in life, which would have seemed impossible at an earlier stage. But we, like Rachel, enjoy the comfort of having both feet on the ground. This is true even though our capacity can only be realized when we are stretched beyond what we believe to be our present limits. As I think of Rachel, I am reminded that it is not so much what we know or how hard we pedal in life that matters, but what has become the measure of our stride.
