2020 Russell Athletic Bowl Preview and Pick Against the Spread: Rutgers Vs. Virginia Tech
The Rutgers Scarlet Knights take on the Virginia Tech Hokies in the 2020 Russell Athletic Bowl.
When Virginia Tech is on Offense
Virginia Tech ranks 80th in the nation in scoring at 26.1 points per game. Quarterback Logan Thomas had a disappointing junior season putting up worse numbers this year than he did in 2020. Thomas only completed 52% of his passes and had 17 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. In Virginia Tech's six losses, Thomas only had 6 touchdowns and threw 12 interceptions. Thomas is the leading rusher on Virginia Tech with 528 yards. Wide receivers Marcus Davis and Corey Fuller are solid deep threats and average 19.0 and 18.8 yards per catch respectively.
The Scarlet Knights were a great defensive team in 2020. They rank 5th in the nation in scoring defense giving up just 14.3 points per game. In four games this season Rutgers held their opponents to 7 points or less. As a team, Rutgers had 22 sacks and 16 interceptions.
When Rutgers is on Offense
Rutgers' offense was not nearly as impressive as their defense this year. The Scarlet Knights rank 96th in the nation in scoring at just 22.4 points per game. Sophomore quarterback Gary Nova was a bit erratic this season. Nova had some stellar games like his 397 yards, 5 touchdowns, and 0 interceptions against Arkansas. He also had several terrible games including a 6 interception performance in a loss to Kent State. Running back Jawan Jamison is the top offensive weapon for Rutgers. Jamison averaged 4.4 yards per carry on his way to 1054 yards rushing and also racked up 322 yards receiving.
Virginia Tech ranks 38th in the nation in scoring defense at 23.9 points per game. The Hokies had some success rushing the passer this season and sacked opposing quarterbacks 32 times in 12 games. They also had 12 interceptions as a team.
2020 Russell Athletic Bowl Pick Against the Spread
Virginia Tech is favored by 2.5 points over Rutgers in the 2020 Russell Athletic Bowl. The Hokies underachieved this season, but played better in their final three games and have some momentum heading into the bowl game. Rutgers on the other hand lost their final two games of the season. Rutgers' quarterback Gary Nova is the key to this game. The Scarlet Knights need Nova to play a smart, consistent football game against the Hokies. I think Virginia Tech will be able to put some heat on Nova and force him to make mistakes. I expect a close, low-scoring game and I'm taking Virginia Tech to win and cover.
